Tatreez: Palestinian Embroidery

Documentary: Embroidering Resistance by Ruofei Shang featuring Noora (myself) and Leena.

This tatreez project in collaboration with SALWA was created for the Black United Body 2024 fashion show Black Ivy at Bentley University. Sewn by the founder of SALWA, and embroidered by myself, the white cotton bull denim jacket with black embroidery honors the innocent lives lost in Gaza since October of 2023. The embroidery on the jacket contains two motifs originating from Gaza, the cypress tree, running down the front, and the basil motif along the collar. The jacket chest size is about 48 inches, shoulder size is 20 inches, and the sleeves are 27 inches.

Mansouri handwoven Cotton. 19.5 by 15.5 inches.
Featured in Gül Gallery- We Kneel Not, is a hand embroidered replica of the Palestinian flag through the traditional technique of Tatreez. The color of the flag consists of different Tatreez motifs symbolizing Palestinian connection to the land, and its rich history: the star of Bethlehem in red, the Keffiyeh net print in black, the cypress tree in white, and the olive print in green.

This tatreez project is meant to resemble a modernized version of a thobe. It’s hand sewn by myself made out of Mansouri handwoven Cotton from the old city of Jerusalem. The cut and design of the shirt is inspired by a traditional Palestinian dress with a slit in the middle and traditional Mnajil red edging. The embroidery in the center was inspired from the chest panel of a thobe and is a collection of different motifs from the tatreez book A Guide to Palestinian Embroidery, written by Nabil Anini and Suleiman Mansour. The size of the shirt is 20 by 14 inches and the size of the embroidered design is 8 by 5 inches.
